Book Discussion

We schedule eight book discussion meeting per year, from September through June.  The Book Discussion co-chairs select well-written and well-researched books about Asia by Asian authors or by Western authors who are experts in a particular Asian culture.  We try to choose books that reveal attitudes and customs, wrapped in an engrossing story and usually include two Chinese books, two Japanese books and two Indian or Pakistani books. The other four books are chosen from the following: Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Afghanistan, Burma, or Korea.  So far we have not gone farther West than  Afghanistan.

For each book, we have a different hostess who determines the number of  attendees based on her available space.  We usually have a waiting list for participation.  Each book has a moderator who first presents approximately ten minutes on the author’s background, education, and  influences and then guides the discussion,  drawing out all the readers’ views.

Our complete book list is found here: AAF Booklist 1994-2023
